I am interested to know what sort of IT staffing set-up companies have created to cope with their data warehouse requirements.
We run a data warehouse system developed by our parent company (utilising Oracle and Cognos) - currently this is limited to two business modules/areas but we are expecting this to expand over time.
Typical activities include installation & testing of new releases, access control, creation of new reports for the users, local extensions to the database, general support/training of users, testing of new products (e.g. Reportnet), creation of metadata, etc.

I recommend the book "Managing the DAta Warehouse" as a good first start.

Guess you didn't like my recommendation of the Inmon book, so let me add my advice from experience.

The most important thing you can do regarding staffing is to identify roles (DBA, Data Modeling/Architect, etc) and tasks (nightly loading, help desk) which require personnel assigned to them. Then assign the roles to your staff. This allows you to cross train your people, allows you to remove a staff member who doesn't want to perform a certain role after a period of time, replace those who are not capable in a role, add personnel to roles which are understaffed, and to identify the skill sets you need when hiring replacements for staff who have left or been reassigned.

That’s a practical advice. A star to you.

W860098, based on the typical activities that you mentioned you will require at the minimum, following professionals,

DBA to maintain your databases for performance tuning, Administrative activities such as database security, access control etc., database backups.

Reports writers to write new reports (Business Expert would be good to have)

Help Desk professionals for support calls and

Trainers to train end users
