In our DTP department in Melbourne, the three of us were upgraded to PageMaker 7.0.2. Since we have had this program we have had problems make PDF's and postscript files from PageMaker.

When we print to file to make the .ps, a message comes up saying it cannot embed the following fonts then it lists the font. The when we send the file to the distiller it PDF's fine without any error messages about embedding fonts, however the files will change the symbols (ie. ' - è ,) to something totally different or removing spaces and changing letters. The changes are so subtle that our jobs have been sent to the printers and the customer has complained and we have had to redo them at the cost to the company.

We are using the same files we did for PageMaker 6.5 and 7.0.1 and we did not have this problem before getting 7.0.2. I have tried to contact adobe about this problem and look it up on the internet but haven't yet found any answers.

As this is the very last version of PageMaker to ever be made again, it's not these problems will be fixed in the next version. From here on Adobe is moving all PageMaker users to InDesign (All pagemaker files can open in indesign).

The other problem is, because we have saved all our files as PageMaker 7.0 files we cannot go back to using 6.5 because they will not open. Only PageMaker 7.0.1 and Indesign will open the files now. As a department we do not mind moving to Indesign but this would affect the other DTP departments around Australia

Can you please advise me on where or what our department should do from here or if there is a way of fixing the problem as PDFing files is something we all do about 10 times a day.

Which version of Distiller/Acrobat are you using, with which Job Settings? I'm not familiar with PageMaker, but I'm wondering if you have to go through the step of printing to file/PostScript first. Or, if you can save directly to PDF instead.

You haven't stated which version of Acrobat Distiller or which operating system you are using with PM, but if it is V6 Distiller with Windows, then Adobe's advice is as follows:

Installation Instructions (Windows only)

Install Acrobat 6.0 before installing PageMaker.

Disregard the message that appears at the end of the PageMaker installation - Adobe PageMaker 7.0 requires the installation of Acrobat Distiller 4.0 or 5.0.

Do not install the version of Distiller® included on the PageMaker 7.0 CD.

If you need to use an older version of Distiller to create your PDF (i.e. for compatibility reasons) from earlier versions of PageMaker, then maintain at least one machine for that purpose.

If this doesn't help, then have a look at the PM Windows FAQs at the Adobe Usee to user forums:

If this doesn't help, ask the question over in the Pagemaker forum here at Tek)Tips, as the expert in PM/PDF issues (BigJohn) doesn't often come to this forum.
