Issue with moving Model

Good morning all,

I had just restored my master db (to a different server - we are migrating all of the databases on one server to a new server), msdb and model. Removed the suspect user databases (plan on restoring them next) and was in the process of moving the model database when things headed south. I went into the startup paramenters and added the flag -T3608, stopped and started sql server, detached the model db, copied the files to the new location and tried to reattach the model db. Every time I try to reattach I lose my network connection to sql server - in fact no matter what I try to do I lose the connection. I am seeing the following error in the event viewer application log:

SuperSocket info: ConnectionListen(shared-Memory(LPC)):Error 5.

I had gone through this process in the past and never ran into this - the only difference I can think of is this server I moved the db's to is not on the domain and I am using the local system account to run the service instead of a domain account. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Any reason that you are moving the model database? It should be the same on each server. If you have made changes to model (99% of people don't) then just script the changes and run the script on the new server. If you haven't made changes to it, then don't worry about it.

I was just relocating the files themselves on the server because I did not like the old structure and wanted to clean it up.

What happens if you do the attach from the local console?

I tried to connect in single user mode (from dos prompt) and did the sqlservr.exe -f then connected through query analyzer to try to reattach that way and back in the dos window saw error 9003 -- The LSN was passed to log scan in database model is invalid.

Try renaming the log file, and attaching using sp_attach_single_file_db and see if that works. I'm not sure if it can be used on model, but it's worth a try.

You might also want to try restoring model from a backup.

It will not let me reattach a single file - I might be able to recover except that to move model you have to set a startup parameter. Is there a way to remove the startup parameter? (otherwise it needs to use temp db and cannot since the T3608 does not bring up the other db's) Anyone know how to get around that?
