Hello,

We have a Cisco 2501 and using a ethernet and a serial interface to our CSU/DSU unit. We started to experience some activity where we cant use our windows vpn to our client and they told us that their is some packet loss and packet dropping probably occurring. I dont have too much Cisco experience but I checked the serial port and this is what I found:

ROUTER#show inter serial0
Serial0 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is XXXXX
Description: Frame Relay North Jersey XXXXXXXX NJ
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255
Encapsulation FRAME-RELAY, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)
LMI enq sent 1822, LMI stat recvd 1822, LMI upd recvd 0, DTE LMI up
LMI enq recvd 0, LMI stat sent 0, LMI upd sent 0
LMI DLCI 0 LMI type is ANSI Annex D frame relay DTE
FR SVC disabled, LAPF state down
Broadcast queue 0/64, broadcasts sent/dropped 304/0, interface broadcasts 0
Last input 00:00:00, output 00:00:00, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue 0/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 0 drops
5 minute input rate 43000 bits/sec, 8 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 3000 bits/sec, 7 packets/sec
292434 packets input, 183459757 bytes, 0 no buffer
Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
9 input errors, 7 CRC, 0 frame, 1 overrun, 1 ignored, 6 abort
237321 packets output, 37145364 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 3 interface resets
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out
0 carrier transitions
DCD=up DSR=up DTR=up RTS=up CTS=up

I also had power cycled on and off this Cisco router and before it had about 203 input errors,181 CRC,19 frame, 11 overrun, 11 ignored,117 aborted
I checked the ethernet interface and there where no input errors there at all. Could it be hardware is bad on this router or is it our ISP?
We have Verizon as our ISP, the say the line is clean but I dont believe it.

What's on the other end of the Serial 0 interface? As you can see, you are getting alot of errors coming into that serial interface? See if there are errors on the interface that on the other end of your serial 0 interface. That will give you some information that will guide you in a way if it's the frame or the router.

clear counters to see if you are increment counters. show frame pvc to see if your pvc bounced or do a show log and see if your interfaced bounced at all. If its bouncing just call it into verizon have them test the circuit.

Input errors to the serial usually result from cabling issues, framing issues, timing issues, or noisy ckts, have the provider verify integrity of the ckt, and also ensure that you are receiving the proper clock, that is a usual suspect with input errors. Its usually the line as the source, use the show controllers t1 command and see if their are line and path code violations, also try loopbacks your devices in house to eliminate the possibility of faulty equipment. Not in this exact order but these are some options.

I used to work for an ISP. Whenever I saw something like that on a customer's router, my first suspicion was our [isp] connection. The advice above is good. Check it out. I'm betting it is your ISP.
