Please let me know as to where can i get an isql utility to run a query from the front-end (something which is there in oracle). I have eval copy of ids server 9.4 on win 2000, i have also installed client sdk 2.81. I need to fire sql statements from the front-end. pls. advice.

Best Regards,

lloyd

Hi,

Informix 9.4 is not bundled with isql product. It is an independent product need to be bought separately. If you need an interface to fire sql statements you may use dbaccess with in the server box or from a client machine using telnet protocol.

You may also use any generic front-end tools/products to connect your backend database making use of odbc. According to the facilities given with in such tools, you would be able to fire your sql statements.

Hi Shriyan,

Thanks a lot for your feeback. SO ISQL has to be bought seperately. That means i need to download a 3rd party utility from the net. But then thru this tools i can only perform sql statements. If i need to write procedures & triggers i would have to run from the server, since there would be syntax problems. I had also raised a question for client connectivity problem. I had taken help from one of threads to setup the connection, but still i get the client-name not in hosts file. Are u aware of any settings to be done on the client side. Also are you aware of any administration tools from the front-end, how we use onmonitor at the back-end, there must be some tools to monitor the server from the client too, otherwise i always have to sit on the server to perform admin tasks. Thanks once again.

Lloyd:

Since you have 9.4 version running on Win2000 server, you need not to have the ISQL product, unless you have some specific application or routines written, on it.

You can use "dbaccess" utility, which is bundled with the 9.4 version, for executing all sorts of activities, including SQLs, triggers, procedures etc.

You can use Win95/98/ME/2K built-in "telnet" to go into the server machine from a client pc.

For odbc related problems & issues, you may search other 2 forums available under this site. You will find plenty of threads spanning on this subject.

Thanks once again, you have been a great help.

Hi Shriyan

I have been looking at the Advanced Query Tool the link is below, I know what you mean I have used TOAD with Oracle before and it does give you more flexibility as opposed to running sql directly against the db as well as the other features these tools offer.

I am just in the process of testing AQT but our tech dept are trying to find out how to configure it and get the correct drivers. I can let you know of the progress we make. We are using Informix Version 7.31UD4.

Have a look at the tool and see if the features are suitable for your needs.

Apologies my last post about AQT should have been directed at Lloyd.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the link, i could download it. A very good query tool.

No problem Lloyd, I have tried it with local databases and it works fine but just need to resolve the Informix on Unix issue. If you manage to implement it successfully let me know.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Lloyd,

For the error ''client-name not in hosts file'' , while connecting front end tools, you search the 'hosts' file in the client side. You need to mention the server I.P address in the host file in the client side as well as the client I.P address in the server side '/etc/hosts' file
also.

Thanks a lot for your advice, after making an entry in the etc/services file at both ends, i tried Ilogin demo and it connected.

At present we have informix on NT, once we use unix, i will try it out & let you know.

Are u guys aware of Onmonitor kind of utility on NT, the one which we use in unix to add dbspaces, logs. In NT i have to run commands like onspaces, onparams. Onmonitor is not included in the pack.

Hi,

WinSQL is a utility for programmers and administrators who deal with relational databases. It uses ODBC to connect to any database, including Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase, Informix, IBM DB2, MS Access, Postgre SQL, MySQL, and more. Besides running SQL statements, it allows you to view the database catalog in a hierarchical format. It includes many query wizards for those who are not familiar with SQL.

Thanks Shriyan

Looks like a good tool to compare AQT with. They seem very similar from the User Guide.
