Hi guys,

My Dad runs a small business, and currently has a static web site where html pages are hosted on demon.co.uk, but wishes to uprate the website to interface dynamically with databases etc - which I have offered to write for him using J2EE etc [database <-> servlet <-> jsp/html] ...

my question is :
are providers such as demon.co.uk (a UK ISP) capable of hosting this kind of service, and if so, do the images and data etc need to be hosted on their server, or is it possible for them to forward requests to our local (but connected) server and database in order to serve out the info, or is it better to buy a static IP address and do all the hosting ourselves. (I have the ability to to this coding wise [I think ... with your help ?!!])

Which do you think would be the better choice - financially and performance-wise.

We don't really have a lot of cash to spend, and couldn't really afford major costs - as this is about me getting experiance at writing commercial J2EE applications as it is making his website look better !!!

Thanks for your help,

Regards,

Ben

I would always go with another host instead of your ISP if you change ISP you don't loose your hosting service. You can get a host over here for as little as $5 a month. Which is about 3 quid 50.

Check out Good service low cost.

If you want a really really low budget solution check out No-IP.com. You don't need a static ip. You can host yourself from a dynamic ip but still have a decent hostname.

I do both =), and it costs me about $16 a month. foo
