Hi Jim,

copy tftp run

I feel retarded asking this but....

Isnt' copy tftp run suppost to overwrite the existing running-config?

Ok, so I have a very basic startup config on all of the routers that I want to keep. . I've copied this to tftp. Lets call this ConfigA.

Tonight, I changed the configs on all the routers to prepare for a new lab. Lets call this ConfigB. I set up the new ips and switched my cabling around, got it all working, then saved each ConfigB to tftp.
I did not copy run start because I want to keep ConfigA in startup.
Then I did the lab, without saving anything I did. At the end of the lab, I wanted to revert back to ConfigB..

So I did copy tftp run, thinking this would overwrite the running-config and would remove all the changes I had made while doing the lab. When I show run, all of the changes I made while doing the lab are still there.
I open the ConfigB files with notepad, and they look like they should with no changes from doing the lab.

When I show start, or show config, it's ConfigA like it is suppost to be.

Isnt' copy tftp run suppost to overwrite the existing running-config?

I get the same thing on all routers. I have to be missing something very basic....

thanks,
HC

That command, copy tftp run, will not over-write the running config. It *merges* the new information with the existing running config. Some information will be overwritten, but some of the prior config may remain. The best way to do this is to erase the startup config, copy the config from tftp to startup-config, and then reload.

Thanks alot, thats what I suspected.
