ISDN2e wiring to BRI8 module 1

lo folks, probably a very newbie Q but i've only ever installed our ip office boxes for isdn30 and analogue lines. but in this office we now have 4 isdn2e line, giving 8 channels. the little BT boxes (1 NTE8 box per line, 4 in total) that the engineer put in each have 2 RJ-45 ports, 1 per channel i assume, yet the BRI8 card has 4 ports, 1 per ISDN line, right?

question is, how do i wire the lines to the box? i've tried disconecting the NTE8 and wiring 1 cat5 cable, to carry 4 pairs each crimped to one rj-45 connector, but that didnt work...

any help would be appreciated thx!

1 normal cat 5 patch lead from each port of the BRI card on the IPO to 1 (only) of the sockets on each NTE.

I don't know why the BT NTEs have 2 sockets, but they do. Both channels of the BRI are presented on each socket

oh man that was embarssing! should have tried just a standard cat5 out of one of the 2 ports!

many thx Matt and yep, very annoying that they put 2 ports there and never mention that both carry the 2 channels!!

BRI NT's have 2 sockets so you can have multiple devices connected. BRI in it's definition can have up to 8 devices connected to its bus and use TEIs associated to them to direct calls. When connected to a PBX, you generally don't have anything else connected, altough it's technically possible, to it. If it wasn't connected to a PBX but a VicConf unit, for example, you could also connect an ISDN fax, ISDN TE modem, or any other ISDN BRI device and assign different TEI's to differentiate them.

ISDN, whether BRI or PRI, are always presented on a single RJ45 (well these days anyway, using 120ohm but years ago it was might've been coax using 75ohm). BRI uses pairs 1 & 2 (Wh/Bl & Wh/Or for T568a or Wh/Bl & Wh/Gr for T568b). PRI uses pairs 1 & 3 (Wh/Bl & Wh/Or for T568a or Wh/Bl & Wh/Gr for T568b).

But as far as the IP Office goes, just plug a standard (not crossover) patch cable in and it works. If you get a system with the trunk card built in already, it comes with the red cables. If you buy the trunk card and install it separately, you need to supply your own cables.
