Question 1: Is an isdn and pri channel the same and when one refers to the 1 pri channel out of 23 similar to an independent telphone line?

Question 2: I have a radio station that needs to broadcast from my location and requested an isdn line for a codec machine at 64bit could i possibly supply them channels from my pri to support that?

Question 3: right now i have a pool:BlocB with 23 channels attached to it could i possibly pull out a few channels out and supply them with those channels?

Question 4: can i assign a DID to each isdn/pri channel independently then?

Question 5: Can i route that equipment through layer 3 switch using vlan's into the channel?

thank-you for shedding any light on isdn and pri's

George

1)PRI is ISDN
2 & 3) I think whoever the provider is can do this, they can break out voice and data channels.
4) You can assign DID’s but they will come down whatever channel is idle at the time.
But you can assign the number to any phone you want it to go to.
5) Not sure about this one.

Hopefully someone can give some more input here.
Good luck with the project.

To elaborate on some of hawks' comments: there are two types of ISDN service in North America, Primary Rate and Basic Rate. Primary Rate ISDN is provisioned on a DS1 circuit and consists of 23 B(Bearer) channels and one D(Data) channel. Basic Rate ISDN is provisioned on a single pair and consists of 2B+D channels. All the ISDN channels have 64Kb capacity. Typically a radio station uses BRI ISDN for remote broadcasts to connect to the station. In the old days, we used an equalized audio private line ckt to the station from the remote location.

Whether you can break out channels and DID numbers depends on your provider and how the DS1 is provisioned, and whether the provider is using a real CO switch (ie: 5ESS or DMS100, etc.) or emulating a switch in an IAD, or soft switch. In a real CO switch most of the number and channel provisioning is done at the Trunk Group level. I don't know what the other types can or cannot do in that regard.

The next part would be how you plan to provide a BRI ISDN interface to connect to the radio station's equipment? I am not aware of the BCM50 being able to provide that kind of station port connection. Even though the digital stations on the Norstar and BCMs are using a modified form of BRI ISDN. I doubt if Notel ever wrote any software to support such a connection.

You might contact your telco service provider to find out if they support this type of service arrangement. I don't know if there are any IADs that provide a BRI ISDN connection. All the ones I have seen provide either analog POTS, DS1, or both in addition to Ethernet.

Hope this helps...

If you use a BRI ISDN card then you can set the ports as an S-bus..which provides ISDN to the desk.
You need special ISDN crossover cables to simulate the s- bus
We use to get a red cat5 cable from nortel for this.

It's all in the manual..
