Hello:
We are playing the ISDN game with a Telco(It Still Don't Work).
Telco has a Siemans EWDN co switch. We have a Nortel ARN router with a s/t BRI module in slot.
We have verified this setup with another Telco(T1 & BRI ISDN) work ok.
Siemens web site is vague about Nortel equipment. We have laid the problem in the Telco's lap:either resolve it or we go to another Telco.
I am just curious about this Siemans switch. We have had no problems with Bell,Verizon,Sprint, and the other mom & pop
carriers.

Any other folks with like problems??

It Still Dont Work because you need to understand that the core players you've mentioned are all different in their handling of what they view as a PORT and what you view as ISDN.

Siemens EWDN is a different animal. You may need to look at a U-interface. Programming side is very much different too. Don't expect Siemens to have Nortel info- it works the other way around. Your Nortel docs should have info about the CO Types and Protocols and Interfaces that are supported.

I'd be surprised if Siemens EWDN is supported by your gear.

BRIs are also becoming LOW Priority in USA- not growth.

Let's turn around things: I had Siemens gear (Office Point) and please don't remind me.... anyway, Telco was Verizon and CO was DMS. What ya think happened ? Hours, and hours, days and days... til I got hold of a CO Tech- which does not happen often...finally, we go a "formidable" solution and AT&T terminators and some luck. DID it work ? Yes. Not great, but good enough.

ISDN BRI is not a winning solution for any carrier. Maybe you want to look elsewhere for a solution.

"Bell,Verizon,Sprint, and the other mom & pop
carriers."

Come on, Mom & Pop ????? [tongue]

The older I get, the less I know

We went to another carrier. No problems at all, circuit(s)
came up.
Siemens had no support at all,the local mom & pop dir not have anyone with in-depth knowledge of the switch. They lost a big account.

Never heard of the EWDN, but..

The Siemens EWSD switch is one of the more common LEC ISDN switch. Not nearly as many BRIs as on DMS or 5ESS.

Supports NI-1 and I am fairly certain most of NI-2. There was one generic out there that required calling party number by default, but later they fixed that.

You gear would be configured for NI-1 or NI-2 and it should have worked (if it predate National ISDN then it probably won't work.

There is one other quirk. If you are on an EWSD on a fairly short loop you may have problems with compatibility at the U interface layer 1 2B1Q with the AT&T/Lucent SCNT (single chip NT1). Basically the NT1 never sees the line.

Lucent did fix this in the chip beofre the sold out that line of ICs.

The solution is to place 2 resistors *in series* with the line, 1 in series with tip and the other in the ring side. Typical value is about 600 Ohms.
