We have a Cisco 1602 router with the Wic card already
being used for a T1. We want to do an ISDN As a backup router. Can we add a ISDN router and make the Cisco Router use this if T1 goes down. And if possible what version of Cisco IOS is needed.

Mark

Absolutely, you need to get a BRI interface for your router and order your ISDN line...

When you get that let us know and we can help you configure it, the only advice I'm gonna give you for now is...

config t
no ip dns look-up
^z

That is the MOST annoying feature with ISDN back-up on a router. If you are on the command line and type;

soh log (instead of sho log)

it brings up the ISDN because soh isn't a command so it must be a DNS name and it has to search every interface for it.

But the 1602 only comes with a built in 56k and a wic slot being used for t1, where would I put the ISDN ?

Unfortunately Mark looks like the best solution here is to upgrade to a 1603r. This will give you 1 10base ethernet, 1 onboard bri (s/t) and 1 wic slot. This will handle your set-up. However I don't usually like to suggest this but you could grab an isdn box such as a pipeline (ascend) and drop that onto your lan. You then make that your back-up when your T goes down you can route to the isdn box via you ethernet 0 interface. It would help keep you sane if you had your router hit a switch before your lan that would give you the capability to segment your lan and isdn box to prevent misconfigured workstation routes from triggering your isdn connection. Mind the type of isdn circuit you order if you get a (u) you need the 1604r instead of the 1603r. Good luck and let us know when your ready to do some configs.

I would upgrade to a 1720 router. This router will give you
better performance and or very reliable. Jeter@LasVegas.com
