My CRM server crashed recently and I had to reinstall it (actually I reinstalled the whole machine...)
Prior to the CRM installation I installed the SQL server and restored the DB from backup (lucky me, the tape actually worked ;) )
During the installation I couldn't select the restored DB so I selected to create a new DB.
After the installation was complete I tried to restore the DB over the new DB which worked fine, BUT! now I can't connect to the system and the event manager (application) shows the following error for the MSCRMDeploymentManagerSnapin: IsCRMSysAdmin : WhoAmI failed.

I was able to identify the problem which is that the CRM creates security groups with a specific SID and that SID is used throughout the DB. when I restored the DB the SID doesn't match anymore.

Solution anyone? Please....

You need to go back and work out why you could not select your restored database. You do not mention the error you get?
