i was told that the ISA server 2004 would speed up server2003. Is this true? can i install ISA with server2003 standard edition and install it over top? Does ISA server run in the background or does it replace server 2003?
Speed Up Windows Server 2003?! No - It won't do that for normal file/print services.
It can be installed on Standard server, but ISA server is a combination Web Proxy/Software Firewall/Web Cache server. It is the web cacheing component that someone is probably trying to tell you will speed up Server 2003 - but this only applies to web sites/services.
ISA server can, in fact, place a significant load on its host server depending on its configuration.
If you already have a good firewall and basic internet control requirements, you most likely won't need to acquire ISA server. If you do want to have extremely fine control over your internet services, ISA server is your product.
