my ISA modem was working fine on Windows 98. I upgraded to Windows XP now it won't work. Any way to make it work or do I have buy a new PCI modem?

If the manufacturer has drivers for Win2K but not XP, you might try them -- I've had some luck with this in the past (ignore any warning messages you get about incompatible drivers; they'll either work or not work, and if not they won't break anything after you uninstall them).

Not to condone throwing money at a problem, but you can procure a decent 56k PCI modem for US$25 or so. Frankly, if your motherboard has an ISA slot I'm guessing it's quite old, or else I'd suggest a nicer one.

Robert,

Are you having resource conflict problems ? If yes then check your BIOS to see if it will allow you to reserve IRQs for legacy devices. If it does, reserve the IRQ that the modem is using, restart the system and try installing the device again.

Hope this helps.
