Is Volume Shadow for shares only?

Is it possible to apply VSS to the OS partition or is this beyond the capability/performance needed.

to enable on an OS partition, would I simply create a new share at the base of the volume?

Volume Shadow Copy only works with files accessed over shares.

Volume Shadow Copy is only intended as a quick way of getting older versions of files without running down the companys it-department and ask for the backup all the time.

It works only as Lostwages mentions above on network shares.

Volume Shadow Copy is not intended as a replacement of ordinary backups, so you should still perform ordinary backups of your users files.

Use system restore and ordinary backups to secure your operating system partition as well.
