Is this simple to do in Excel? (extrating partial values from a cell)

I have cells which contain data like "07 APR 2003" and "2 YRS" or "MAR03". Is there a simple Excel command which I can use which would let me query any of these cells and extract 07, APR, 2 (from 2 YRS) or MAR (from MAR03)?

If not, any ideas how I could even begin coding something to do the same job?

Hey MG,
Is it TEXT or a DATE -- BIG difference!

If a DATE, then use functions: DAY, MONTH, YEAR etc

If TEXT then functions LEFT, RIGHT, MID
