Is this legal in a ksh script?

Can i do:

if [[ -e $FILE.* || -e $FILE2.* ]]; then

rm -e $FILE.*
rm -e $FILE2.*
fi


Wildcards in the if clause don't seem to work and I'm not sure why.I have ksh 88

It's a valid command, works for Solaris 5.8 but did not work in RH Linux ES 3 (bash or ksh).

Why not simply this ?
rm -f $FILE.* $FILE2.*
