A friend wanted me to fix their computer because it wouldnt boot up and load windows. I was gonna FDISK, Format, and reinstall but I couldn't get it to work. I was getting 2 error messages.

The first one was during the first boot process, "Pri Master HDD error." I had an option to resume then it tried to boot from A:. When I got the A: prompt I typed in FDISK and got a message of "no fixed disk..." (or something real close to that). The hard drive is making a weird noise almost like grinding. I have checked the cables going to the HD and made sure they were connected. Pulled them and reconnected them. Im not very good at Hardware issues but just thought the HD may be mechanically bad. What does the problem seem to be or is there enought to go on. Thanks for the help!

The grinding may be indicative of something wrong inside. It could also be attempts to read a sector that it can't find for whatever reason. Try it from power up and see if it is grinding immediately. If so , internal problem. Should spin up for several seconds with whirring noise, then two zips where it steps in then out. then just a whir for second or two before attempting to read. Ed Fair
