Is there anyway to group off a shared variable coming from a subreport

I understand crystal preforms grouping before it processes subreports. I just thought I would see if you gurus knew any tricks or tips for grouping a shared variable coming from a subreport. I am using crystal V9.

Values returned from a subreport can't be used until the next section. Grouping has to be based on the attributes of individual 'rows'.

You might consider 'turning the report upside down' - doing the subreport functions in the main report and vice versa.
