I had to bounce my 4.11 server over the weekend after the command line on the console "disappeared".

I couldn't find the equivilant of Netware 3.x's FCONSOLE nor how to dismount the volumes.

My only recourse was to backup what I could to an off-line disk then hit the power switch. Not very comfortable with that.

For future reference, I hopefully not mine, what could I have done?

To bring a server down gracefully, when the console is locked, do this - hold down the left ctrl+shift+alt+esc keys, that should prompt you to bring the server down, saye yes. It should dismount the volumes. Another way, I'm not sure if it dismounts the volume, but hold down both the shift keys +alt+esc and that should take you to the debug mode and then type q. When it asks exit to dos? say yes. hope this helps

Fantastic, I've filed that one away but hope I never did it again!

Thanks.

Hi,

A couple of notes here.

First, going into the debugger and forcing the server down will not dismount the volumes.

Second Fconsole can be used on all NetWare versions, although I have not tried it with NetWare 6 yet.

Hi Lou,

Thanks, on both counts. I'll avoid the debugger option in that case.

However, on the subject of FCONSOLE, does that mean that I can copy the file off my 3.12 server and use that, or is there a dowmloadable version? I did check Novell's site and did a search of the SYS volume.

TIA,
Granville.

If memory serves, if you do a LSHIFT-RSHIFT-CTRL-ESC, you actually get the option to 1. Down server and dismount volumes, 2. Force down server and, 3. Load alternate console screen

Hi again,

For TheLAD....it's Ctrl + Alt + Exc for the down prompt.
It's Shift + Shift + Alt + Esc for Debugger.

For Grandville..... you can either use the one from a 3.12 server or for a later version I would download file TABND2A.EXE. This file contains troubleshooting tools which includes FCONSOLE.

Thanks to all,

I've got hold of a copy of TABND2A.EXE, from the company who does our network/server support, plus I've got a fall back with the Ctrl+Alt+Esc combo.

I feel much happier now!
