There is an excel add-in - a hidden workbook with property Isaddin set to True and extension "xla" (you can save workbook as add-in). The purpose is to be excel's extension - additional functions, forms and generally interface customization.
The code can be protected by setting project's password in VB Editor.
It is not the best protection, but without cracking tools you can't see the contents of sheets and VBA project.
