Is there a way to list all the variables set up on any machine ? for instance a way of displaying all the differnent variables that have the path to Oracle?

Also how can i set up a script with a username and password embedded in it so that no one can read the password or username within the script by viewing it ?

set | pg

will display the system variables set up and echo $PATH will show you the current path for the user in question. Does this help?

That does help yes thanks its a start, is there a way of showing other users variables. The reason for this is that there are a number of scripts that use differnent variables to call the same dirs scripts etc and i wish to list them so that i can standardise them across the server.

I don't think there is, sorry. Unless you list your users' .profiles and try to compare how they're setting their variables within that file. In any case, if your system is working, I'd be careful you don't end up causing yourself more problems than you think you might be solving by introducing unreferenced variables and the like!

As far as the second part of your post above is concerned, can you not just give whatever file contains your username/password combination permissions of 700 so that only the owner can read, write and execute it? Again, this is fraught with problems should anyone with a bit of savvy access your system, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Hope this helps anyway.

Thanks Ken it does help me in that it will stop me from creating problems rather than resolving them!
