Is there a way to check file size

I have a script right now that loads the MS Dialog box and allows the user(s) to enter a file (gif/jpg) and this will load the text box path. Before the image can be used, I need to test for the file size due to a size limit on the server. Is there a method to accomplish this? I just don't know, that's why I'm asking. I've never checked for this and I want to know how. Could you explain to me what I need to know or do to accomplish this action.
