Is there a point to this type of page?

Thank you. How is it over optimized? A little overkill?

Nah, it's a machine-generated entry page. They start by writing a paragraph about CA real estate, then an automated thesaurus goes through and rewrites several subtly changed versions of the same text pretending to be a set of search results.

The idea is that spiders will index all that text, and that somebody searching for various real-estatey keywords will be directed to it.

Does it help? Maybe, for a while. But search engines are always honing their algorithms to pick out spider-bait pages like these, so any benefit will disappear sooner or later.

SEs' alogrithms are aimed at finding pages that are of interest to people searching for particular keywords. They are (inevitably) imperfect, but changing and improving all the time. One way to get top rankings is to chase the algorithms - stuffing your page with the things that spiders like to see. Do it right, and you can disguise a useless page as a useful one. However, it's a constant task keeping track of the algos and trying to keep one step ahead.

A better approach is to build genuinely useful pages. Sure, you should be aware of what will help SEs index your site (and what might hinder them), but good content will always win out in the end. There's also the benefit that you're much more likely to convert human visitors into customers if the pages they land on are useful to them!

I'd like to add that if my search had turned up that page, I would have clicked straight on to the next on the list.
Fair to say that it is of little use getting hits to a site if the visitors find the page difficult to read or useless, and move on.

Moral? Design for people.
A site might get a few less hits that way but the visitors who find their way there are more likely to stay.
Andy.
