Just want to ask is there a better program then FP for web design, i cant get the hang of, all my pages are square and life less, keep looking at some good pages on the net and when you view the source they say they are done in FP.

I dont belive them.

Or does anybody have a idiots guide to designing a page.

Thanks

Life is made on the decisions you make not the chances we take.

Well it depends on what you are designing. You can buy the most expensive software for design a site - and it still will look "lifeless" if you do not have any color coordination, content, etc on your web site. When you design a site, think about what you want & who you client base is. If it is kids, flahs, buttons that go pop when you press them, etc are great - but for someone who is older, that might be annoying. And plus the site that you designed might look fantastic to others. I have this one web site that I totally despise, but the CEO likes it because it helps him get into the dors of potential investors.

Are you using the FP themes? if so, that might be your problem. I never was one on their themese. You might look at some other templates on the web. That is usually the best place to start. Find a template that you like & then build from that.

Corey,

Thanks for the reply, did you design ? thats the type of layout and colours i want for mine, if you did this site was it with a template if so where did you get it from.

I used a couple of tables & everything. I did start out with a template & tweaked it. If you want some good templates, there are a lot of different sites out there that offer some great templates:

Most are very easy to work with & most are now using CSS which makes it even easier to work with.

I might also suggest a good book to get started using FP. I found the Sams teach yourself in 24 hours to be a fantastic help back when I was learning FP98.

I have written a book for FrontPage 2000 and FrontPage 2002 as well, after several years of working with thousands of people just starting to learn FP - they are written for beginner through advanced user levels and specifically addressing the most common things that I have learned people are missing in other FP books.

Templates have come a very long way in recent years, as Corey mentioned. A good FrontPage web template might be just the thing that helps you get started learning to use FP, while working with a nice base design already programmed.

Good Luck! & hang in there. FP is a really great tool, getting started might be a bit of a learning curve, but easier to use tools may result in much more limitations on the kind of site you'll be able to design.

One of the biggest things I had trouble with in the beginning was that I didn't have a good graphics program. I was frustrated because none of the clip art programs provided anything good, and what I could make wasn't very good. A veteran Web master suggested some inexpensive graphics programs, and once I got those, the quality of the site went up a lot. Even just one or two good graphics go a long ways. You might want to think about getting a graphics program that you can make your own images.

If other sites are looking the way you like in FrontPage, and yours don't... its probably you and not FP. Site designing does take some creativity on your part. It just doesn't "happen."

Look at site you like, then research and look up how to do it.

Web Authoring programs such as FP are like pencils and pencils do not make the artist, they just help.
Allow me to suggest studying what makes a good or bad web page. Try Vincent Flanders book, "Son of Web Pages that Suck".

Believe it, there are some beautiful sites done with FP. Here's a link to another source for FP templates:
