is there a difference between Flash MX and Flash MX 2004? if so, what is the difference?

Yes, one is newer. Actually they are generally the same, but 2004 has use of Flash 7, and ActionScript 2.0. There are also some new features for animations such as blurring and exloding items, but they are not high-quailty tools.

ActionScript 2.0 is the big difference but MX2004 also has new components; an additional 'developer only' forms based interface in the PRO version; much improved video quality and a new interface design (which is great when you get used to it).

That said I use MX2004 to produce MX/Flash 6 sites as no client has wanted a Flash 7 project thus far: the end product is little different than things that could be done as easily in MX and the take up of the v7 player has been poor.

It's all going to change with 8 though - seen this?

MX2004 also added a behaviors panel for prefabricated actionscripts, similar to how DreamWeaver uses its behavior panel for easy to use javascript. However, I am new to ActionScript so I don't know how good the actionscript turns out to be.

The ActionScript Window has a few nuances that I like, such as pinning a frame.
