Hello to all-

Is there a converter tool in Windows 2008 Hyper-V (as a role, not R2version) that allows me to make a vm out of a physical member Windows 2000 server?

In ESX, there is a PtoV converter tool, such a beast exist in Hyper-V?

thanks for any info...

Yes

The caveat is that it is not part of Hyper-V, it is part of System Center Virtual Machine Manager. If you're running a Hyper-V install of any size you should probably be running SCVMM anyway, but it's an important distinction.

thanks to all!!!

I was looking to implement Sys Center 2007..

I appreciate it.

And I'll add that the process is very smooth, and quite quick. I did a P2V of a 1/2 dozen servers in one day without issue. SCVMM will also recommend which host to put it on if you have more than 1.

SCVMM will also support moving guests among VM hosts, including Virtual Server 2005 hosts.

Blade,

There isn't a "System Center 2007," per se. System Center is Microsoft's umbrella brand for system management tools. There are a number of them:

System Center Operation Manager (SCOM) - health and well-being monitoring, along with knowledge base and quick-fix capabilities.

System Center Configuration Manager (SCVMM) - Former known as SMS, this is a deployment, inventory, and patching tool.

System Center Data Protection Manger - This is essentially a backup product that is disk-based and uses VSS and a "synthetic full" backup technique to reduce backups times and data volumes. It also has hooks for major MS applications like Exchange, SQL, Hyper-V, etc.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager - This is the central management tool to use with Hyper-V if you are managing more than one Hyper-V host.

And just to clarify, System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVVM) can be used to manage VMWare, Microsoft Virtual Server, and Hyper-V virtualization environments, and can move guests between them (in most instances).

Keep in mind that Disk2VHD is not a true P2V tool. All it does is take a disk image (a la Ghost or similar programs) and stores it in a VHD file that can be used for VirtualPC or Hyper-V. It doesn't do anything with the device drivers or have anything to do with a VM configuration, so when after the Disk2VHD conversion is done you'll probably have a nasty hardware mess and a BSOD waiting for you. Not that you couldn't clean it up manually, but I'd never recommend using it as a P2V tool.

However, if you wanted to make VHD files of the data disks in your DB server so that you can copy them to your virtualized development environment, that might be pretty slick. Or you can use it to clone a disk to VHD for use with Windows 7 and 2008 R2's boot from VHD.
