I hope I am posting in the correct area!

My question is how can I tell wheather a cable is cat 4 or cat 5 could I tell based on casing color. E.G. light blue color for cat 4 and grey for cat 5....

Thanks,

Andy.

You can't tell by color. Look for a specification stenciled down the length of the cable.
Not familiar with a cat4. Maybe cat3? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

If it doesnt say cat5e throw it away, better yet look for some that say cat6. Both CAT5 and 4 run 4 pair wires and the colors do vary depending on manufacturer. the real difference is in the speed they support from 20Mbps for Cat4 to 1000Mbps for Cat5. Good luck
