Is the problem at my place or at my ISP

I just got a ADSL connection with two static IP addresses.
I set up a Windows 2000 Adv. Server to act as my DNS and Internet connection for my other clients in my home network.

Now a problem has occured, when I try to send mail from my clients (using Outlook 2000) I get the error response:

"The message could not be sent because it was rejected by the server. Server Response 550 5.7.1 bla bla bla.... Relaying denied"

Is the problem on my server or is it my mail ISP that has problems?

My mail ISP is NOT the same as my ADSL ISP provider.

Thanx for anykind of help! or solutions for that matter!

I am new at this, so I am sure that someone will correct me if this is incorrect, but I think your error is probably from your ISP as their mail server (correctly) is not allowing relying from a machine it does not know.

Allowing relaying from "unknown" machines open a large hole for spammers (accoring to the manual).. why don't you get your ADSL ISP to relay your mail... Your machine should be "authenticated" with them on connection.

Thanx TheRAt!!

I will investigate further!

I'm not sure if this is related to your configuration, but I just got done setting up e-mail on Solaris using qpopper and sendmail. Until I got DNS properly configured, e-mail was getting rejected. I properly pointed the primary DNS to my primary DNS when managing my DNS names, but screwed up my secondary DNS. I could send mail out about 1/2 the time (sometimes rejected by receiving e-mail servers), but mail replies were not coming back at all.

All is well now. I'm also using .forward to get my e-mail at work - which is a good way to test mail.
