While I was working on it, my computer started making a (clicking) noise. I turned it off and started it again. When I started the computer I recieved a message that a system file is missing.
I had a dual boot with Win 98 and Win XP Pro. I was unable to start the computer in Safe Mode or go back to a previous copy of the registry.
Then, I tried to run scandisk using the startup floppy for Win 98.
Next, I tried to format the hard disk. When I tried to format, I got a message --unable to format, boot sector 0 bad or invalid. It recognized the hard drive in BIOS, but Primary Slave=None
Then, I deleted the partitions and tried to format it again, and installed Win 98.
Current Symptoms:
The win 98 was working fine for the 5 minutes I used it for. Then, I restarted the computer and
it did not detect Primary Master or Primary Slave (I don't know what they are) and I got another message on the screen i.e. --Boot disk failure, insert system disk and Press Enter.
In the BIOS Primary Master and Primary Slave show up as Auto whereas it showed the hard drive before this happened. Also, the computer is emitting a constant clicking sound.
I would appreciate any help you could provide. Thanks!
