I was reading on the internet and saw a comment on snort and how it was the best application for protection. Is it only for servers or is it something that I can protect my single PC that is connected by dialup?
I already have Spyblaster, Zonealarm, Spybot, and ADware, and am not having troubles.

SNORT is an intrusion detection system, not exactly necessary for a single PC!

You should be fine with a decent firewall and antivirus.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

orypecos,

I am running IPCop Linux Firewall on an old Dell PIII 500 on my home Verizon FIOS network. IPCop uses Snort for IDS and if you register at Snort you can download the new updates 1 week after they come out (paid members get them right away).

I am not a Linux guru - simple install and it has a good web interface for monitoring the firewall and IDS.

And it is FREE!

Check out - all you need is an older dedicated machine and a few nics for a decent firewall with IDS (Snort)

I hope this helps!

orypecos,

As Lawnboy stated there are several other Linux distros that are free firewalls and many do use Snort for the IDS.

I have downloaded several including Smoothwall, mOnOwall, F.I.R.E and one from the Honeynet Project and have played with them in a security lab setting. You can "Google" free firewall or Linux firewall and see lots of links and reviews.

I always bring up IPCop because it is the one I am using at home with FIOS and before that my DSL connection and I have been very happy with it. The documentation is very good, the community supports it well, in fact I have added some of the add-ins for a even more custom firewall/IDS.

I also use Zone Alarm software firewall and either Norton or AVG anti virus on my actual PCs for a layered approach to security.

Just my thoughts !
