I've been resading about the mail protocol and I would like to use one of the email protocols, but don;t know where to start. How do I configure send_mail or mailq on my Linux 2.1 AS server? I would like to hear more on which one is easier to use and maintain. Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Do you mean 'qmail' ?? 'sendmail' and 'qmail' are mail tranfer agents - "MTA"s. They are applications and are not protocols. Neither of them is easy and you should be real damn sure you understand the basics of email before you put up a mail server.

Otherwise you'll just get hacked and be part of the spam problem.

'mailq' is just a command to check the mail queue for Sendmail. You probably meant Qmail.

There are more MTA's out there, in particular Postfix and Exim. I have worked with all of them except for Exim, and personally have found Postfix the easiest to set up, so I would recommend Postfix for a beginner, and would recommend steering away from Sendmail initially while learning about MTA's.

But in the end the choice is yours.
