Is pthread_mutex initialized in one

Is pthread_mutex initialized in one thread can be used in other threads to lock? Any other additional steps needed to inherit the handles in the other threads? I'm getting EINVAL error in a thread when i'm trying to lock the mutex which was initialized in deifferent thread.
