Is Photoshop a good replacement for PhotoDeluxe Business Edition?

A company I did some work for has been using Adobe PhotoDeluxe 1.01 Business Edition for managing jpeg files created by scanning documents on an HP flatbed scanner.
They upgraded the computer to windows 2000 and found that the program is working but a warning message re compatibility appears when the program is started and there is about a three minute delay when saving images. The adobe support forum indicates nothing really is available to resolve this problem, although others have had the exact same problem. I would like to recommend a replacement for them. Is Photoshop a good replacement or is there another Adobe product that does this? I don't see a newer version of PhotoDeluxe on the Adobe website. Thanks for any help.

Wizywig, are you answering "Yes" to the question that Photoshop is a good replacement or to the question that there is another product?
Thanks!

I've just checked the system requirements for PS7 on the adobe website. It indicates at least Pentium III or 4 is required. The machine that would be getting this product is only a pentium 2 400 mhz computer. Has anyone tried photoshop 7 on a pentium II runnimg at around 400 mhz? If so, has your copy of the program worked continuously without any problems?
If not, can you recommend another product (does not have to be adobe)?

Thanks again.

Why not use Acrobat for archiving scanned documents? Acrobat has OCR capabilities and can produce much better output with black text than JPGs can. Unless you are doing a lot of color document scans, JPG seems like a lousy way to archive documents.

Bad choice of word on my part. The company scans drawings, pictures and photos as well. What do you suggest for these?

I'm not sure what kind of managing you need to do with your scans.

Most scanners can scan directly into a JPG or TIF or whatever. Many offer simple image editing capabilities as well. Photoshop (or its cousins) may not be needed. There are also many free and low cost programs that do what Photoshop does. See gimp.org for a free image editor and get the Windows version from
PhotoDeluxe is still around on the adobe site but has transformed into Photoshop Elements.

I tend to agree with jimoblak. Photoshop might be overkill for your needs. It is a hundred times more robust as an image editor and a lot more expensive. IF you only want to catalog and manage images you might look into Paint Shop photo album go to I haven't used it personally but I have heard much good about it. Also Super Jpg at is very inexpensive and is very good. There are many products like this that would probably do better for what you want and for less money than photoshop.
hope this helps,

If you just want to replace PhotoDeluxe, Photoshop Elements would be your best bet. It is more powerful than PhotoDeluxe but Photoshop 7 would be way too much for what you want to do - and it's very expensive.

Your suggestion sounds good, Matofthemint. I have just got some further info from the user. She had a copy of photoshop and said that she had been performing some of the following on a scanned drawing and perhaps on photos: (1) Change size, retouch, crop,(2) change background, (3)
change background and attach pictures together, (4)sometimes does drawings of half an object, then copies, reverses and attaches to create the whole object's drawing. Can all these be done in PhotoShop Elements?

So far as I know, YES. I haven't used Elements very much, I use Limited Edition which is no longer available, but as Elements is an "up grade" of LE it should work the same, and as I understand it will do more that LE.

But if she already has Photoshop and has no trouble using it - as it seems she doesn't - and it does what she wants, why not just use what she has?

BTW, I run PS7 on two different PII 400 computers (laptops) sometimes, and it runs just fine on both. No, it's not nearly as fast as on my speedier desktops, but it's not problematic or anything.

Greetings, I am new here, but I will try to get my feet wet. If you are only looking for an Image Manager, I would strongly suggest Firehand Ember. It's the best out there. It can do some image editing (Brightness, contrast, sharpness, saturation, etc ...) But like the others have said Photoshop would be overkill.

I am a dabbler in Scanning (Warloc Scans) and I can speak very highly of Ember.

It is made by Firehand Technoligies. Hope this helps
