I just built a new pc and installed a 40gb seagate 7200 hard drive and did a clean install of windows xp home. when i boot the pc it takes about 5 minutes to get to the desktop and it takes 30 secs to a minute to open applications.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.

More info would be helpful (eg, spec of PC, any problems during install).

One guess - do you have a network card that's not connected to a network installed (either expansion or onboard)?

Have you looked in event viewer to see if any clues there?

I'd try removing/disabling sound/network/modem cards/onboard & disconnecting all CD/DVD drives (read & write) and Zip drives & see if that makes a difference (put back one at a time if it does, to find the culprit)

If you're worried about hard drive, run chkdsk on it & get hold of manufacturer's diagnostic utility from their website.

You have asked a related question in another forum, have you listened or taken any action on what has been said?
No it's extremely unlikely to be the hard drive but something else making the system hang.
Please take note and try suggestions already posted.

How much memory do you have on your pc? Lack of sufficient memory can possibly causing your problem.
