I ran a cat 5 cable 350'. I know the limit is around 295' but I had to try. The cable test good with a cable tester. The computer works fine on any other network drop but the long one. I am thinking a booster in the middle. Does anyone have suggestions on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try a high quality brandname NIC in the pc. Many of the cheapo NICs wont reach even the legal distance much less one run *too* far.

Put a 2 or 4-port unmanaged switch, or a hub (not recommended) to increase signal strength. I do not recommend going beyond, or even reaching the limit, as problem may appear slowly, like attenuation or jitter.

Everything will be determined by the speed you are running 328 feet should be max for cat 5. Proper termination and running of the wire make a large impact on performance. Good luck

Try using a level 6 or level 7 grade cable. Both are available from Anixter. Also even a CAT5e cable would be better, since cat5 is no longer recognized as a standard.

Thanks for all the great advice. I finally had to place a hub in the middle to resolve the problem. Thank again.

Just a reminder...The size of your cable doesnt matter as long as you know which ports to plug it into :)

Why not toss in a concentrator at about 250 feet, a couple of rj-45 connectors and give it a wing? There is a reason for the IEEE 802.3 standard.

shield the cable in PVC dconduit and signal quality improves dramaticaly
