It takes 3.5 hours to back up about 20 GB of data on our server. Is this normal backup time? It just seems excessively long. What are the backup times for everyone out there?

My 58.26GB took 8.25 hours... I'd say 3.5 hours is average.

so many factors and so little time... :)

1. Tape drive type (DDS 2 = 50MB/min, LTO = 1000MB/min), 2. SCSI card load and settings,
3. hard drive load and max speed,
4. tape drive config (go to properties of the tape device in BE... make sure it's at manufacturer's recommended settings),
5. SCSI card drivers (see goace's posts on this), newer ones might actually be a problem
6. Data type and compressibility (this is where OS limitations comes into play)
7. Alignment of the planets

Point being, there is no "expected" throughput. Its always a good idea to test any software against the base or another product... eg. try NTbackup. Also, check the vendor's site for expected throughput or give 'em a call, I'm sure they'd love to hear from a 'valued' customer.
