Is it possible to install and then run linux from and external hard drive? If so which brand and type to you recommend like USB, Serial etc... and brand like Maxtor or Fantom. Thanks for any help )
 
I'm sure it is possible:
For your sanity and performance I would look into firewire.
The issue here is the driver support, and the amount of
work that you will have to do. It is scsi emulation again
from the looks of it and after a miserable experience with
ide cdwriters, I am distrustful of going that route.

You can try Iomega Jaz drives if you can get away with 2gb max size ( . They are scsi attached so show up as /dev/sda (assuming no other scsi drives !) but you can swap the physical media easily. Theres a howto here --> .



Thats not really state of the art, however, and I would also recommend looking at firewire - something like this little beauty -->
