One more thing - what happens to the indexes and views associated with the table? will the database take care of those?

When you rename a table, all existing indexes will be linked to the new table. If a view is based on a table that was renamed, and if the view resides in the same database as the table, the database engine updates the "sysviews" system catalog table with the new table name. Both these activities operate automatically.
