Does anyone know the equivalent command to ping a MAC address - dos or other wise. I know that a good network analayser such as the free 3com download can help, but if anyone knows a simpler method let me know.
Thanks

Check your ARP cache.

Try, if you are using Windows...

arp -a

You cannot ping a MAC, but you can discover the MAC in the right setting and ping the IP address.

The MAC is not a normal part of the packet header or datagram portion of TCP/IP messaging.

Other than locally through an ARP discovery and resolution to IP you cannot do what you want to do.

However, the MAC is a part of the ethernet header, and is included in any IP packet sent to/from a given IP address. For MAC discovery, I usually use arping, but the name is misleading. It sends an ARP who-has request based on the IP address, and reports the responding MAC address. If you are in a routed environment, you will receive the router's MAC for any addresses that are behind it.

Good luck!
