Is it possible to convert or import (place) Framemaker files into InDesign files?
Situation: We have two software user manual writers: one use a MAC with Framemaker, the other uses a PC with Framemaker. Framemaker has discontinued upgrades for MACs. Since both writers have InDesign CS3, they can both use InDesign (for compatibility sake). However, the writers would need to convert Framemaker files into InDesign--if this is possible.

If there is no straightforward way to make the conversion, does anyone know a work-around, like converting the Framemaker file into say "MSWord" then importing the MSWord file into InDesign.

B-T-W, giving the MAC user a PC: Not an option. :-\

Thanks for any helpful info.

This is sort of nasty. Depending on the versions of Framemaker & Indesign you might try exporting XML from framemaker and inporting into Indesign.

If you have a copy of Quark Xpress 4 or 5, you can purchase DTP Tools MIF filter for Quark which will import Framemaker docs saved in MIF format into Quark. If you have Quark 4, that will open in Indesign. If you have Quark 5, save down to 4 and open in Indesign. They have a free tryout available, but it will replace some words in teh converted doc, so people don't try to cheat them.

This company also has a beta of an MIF to Indesign converter available. You might try downloading and trying that.
