I wonder if it is possible to use an avi file, quicktime file or mpeg file within Flash?

With MX or MX2004 you can import all three formats directly and use them as you'd use a standard image or movieclip.

MX2004 is especially good with video and compression.

Tools such as Sorenson Squeeze can capture or import fideo files and export them as Flash .swf or .flv files.

In Flash 5 you can import then export the files as image sequences then reimport the sequence to give the illusion of video but you lose audio and can get huge filesizes.
