Hi,

We run a TS server and some of our systems have .msg files stored for our case checkers to then check.

The serever didn't come with any .msg compatible software nor did the 3rd party app we use for storing and viewing these case files and I know on servers such as exchange you cannot and should not install outlook or similar.

Is this the case for a standard Windows 2008 Terminal Server running as an application server?

Thanks,

1DMF.

That's old advice. Subsequent to Exchange 2003 there is no technical issue with installing Outlook (2003 or later) on the same machine as Exchange Server. The problem was caused by incompatible versions of the MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects 1.2.1 (more specifically to do with very different implementations of MAPI32.DLL), but Exchange 2007 and later do not use or ship with the client side MAPI binaries. so the problem does not arise. Indeed, installing Outlook on Exchange Server 2007 et al is pretty much mandatory* if you want to run tools such as OABinteg or MFCmapi.

*well, you can get hold of the standalone MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects as an alternative

Well the last time I tried it was SBS2003 , so that would kind of explain it.

Having looked into the cost of TS licencing for MS Office, it is too expensive and there is no requirement for a full blown email client anyhow, only the ability to view emails and their attachments.

We are running open office & this msgviewer software and so far so good :)
