Im making a site right now and I decided to completly ignore 800 resolution. The site is being designed at about 960px width. I usually go liquid but I wanted a fixed width structure here.

The site is a B2B site and is for dealer information and downloads of information. I have also decided to design for current browsers only. My assumption here is that this is a business to business site and therefore most people would be accessing it from work to download the info. 1024 should be the minimum resolution as most people i assume in this industry do a bit of web reasearch when they are trying to get info.

Was this foolhearty of me to be so forward thinking and start to phase out the 800x600 resolution. Even when making liquid sites I always had about a wide base for my sites. Ive spent a day of work on the site and I think it looks good (but then again i have a larger resolution then 800 and my browsers are current) - i cannot expect everyone to have the same set up as me but is it to much to ask for current browsers (and if they have that then the resolution should be over 800) and vice versa.

Or am i just being circular here?

TBH, I would expect folks' machines at work to be less likely to have the latest browsers & highest resolutions - as compared to at home.

After all, you pretty much always have admin rights on your home pc but not always at work :)

Posting code? Wrap it with code tags: [ignore]

And further, if you put any weight in stats have a look at my list in Browser trends/stats - your view? (thread215-684416).

Almost all of them collect stats on screen res too.

A final point though - why do they have to have their browser window maximised?

I learned a few years back that while my coworkers were like me an used some higher resolutions, my bosses (read older, less technically inclined bosses) were stuck on their 800x600 resolutions. They are VERY resistant to change and say they can't read the smaller text...

Just something to think about...

deecee, as a web designer I go through that same exact question when I do liquid designs.

Alot of people (here) will say 800*600 is dead, while many will refute saying 800*600 isn't, and to prove it they'll post some website with 'browser resolution stats'. As for me personally, when I do liquid designs I use 775px for width, this looks good in 800*600 and in 1024*768, however anything higher (like 1024*1280) it tends to look too small. Slowly I will try phase out 800 resolutions in my liquid designs.

There really is no real answer, you can look at all the resolution stats reports, ask hundreds of desigers, but in the end you have to do what is right for the client, and for you. I say look at the clients' users base. If the clients' user base is senior citizens then stick to 800*600 resolution because it makes the font/screen bigger, if their user base is other businesses, then stick to 1024, etc. Know what I mean?? I agree, this not a sure-fire way of solving this topic (and I assure you, there is no sure-fire answer to this question, because this is a 'personal-taste' question)

I hope this helps you in some way...

PS -- clarkin, I wasn't taking a crack at you because you posted the link to a webstats report...:)

well guys thanks for your input -- im assuming for this project that the users should be somewhat computer savvy -- The target audience is primarily sales people who need access to certain info.

i guess after beta i will try and get some feedback from users. The site is protected by generic password but i would liket down the road to migrate over to individual passwords -- that way i know who to bug about the site from whos logged in :) right now i can only hope some email me feedback

but thanks

Sales people quite often use laptops, and they do not upgrade as often as many other users. 800 x 600 would be a good standard to adhere to, unless you are certain they have state of the art equipment with larger display area, etc.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

If it's confining your page design, I'd say yes, go with 1024.

Be future oriented.

well heres the url for the design right now

like i said its an information portal and i want to get as much info on the screen as possible.

the design is about 900 wide with a 50 px left border -- i cannot give login info but all the pages are blank.

deccee that was no sarcasm, i simply hate 1024*786, cant get along with it...

I really dislike 800*600 but I think you have to design for it, there's still way too many people using it to give up an it.
But it can depend on your target audience like GJM said.

Real nice site deceee, personally I think it is too wide, maybe i'm weird but my browser is never open more than about 80% and I know other people surf that way too. I don't think it would be too difficult to make it narrower or add some flexibility :)
