k, I have a NR-7800A, NEC CD-RW. Worked until I installed XP (clean install). XP recognized the drive, and that it was a CD-RW, but I could neither read nor write from the drive. There didn't seem to be errors in the device manager. the drive initially reads the disk, (ie: drive light comes on for a few seconds, and you can hear wheels turning) Well, i got rid of XP, re imaged my drive with the ghosted image of my previous 98 OS and settings. the same thing is happening. Is it a hardware issue? (yes all the cables are correct, the settings on the hardware are correct, it is recognized as my secondary master during POST, yes it is set up as that for a reason. no room on the other cable) at my wits end and looking for an answer that i can't find anywhere.

If the thing trys to spin up then usually this indicated the optical eye is dirty or just plain busted.
I have recovered 4 out of 5 drives when showing this type of fault by partially stripping and very gentle cleaning the optics with a cotton bud and mild cleaning fluid.
Martin Just trying to help, sometimes falling short, I am only human after all.

maybe it could be your driver for your cd-rw is not upto date so try to get one and i think it will works.

Alomost every time I Start up XP I have to search system devices before my cd-rw will appear, I have the latest driver and have tried all that I can think of. CAn anyone help?

Im not sure but since it has stopped working in the older OS also. recommend:
1. a new CDR cleaner the wet and dry type. with audio.. there is a reason for the audio. let the CD run for bout 5 in remove and then add anothe drop of wet cleaner. ren additional 5 min.

the reboot and see if XP or OS will recognize the CDRW.

2. ??? when u installed XP did u get any responce like: NON COMPATIBLE DEVICE.

3rd. Some tmes equipment simply failes. and if the laser lite is not working the CDRW is DEAD. :-(
