Is it all about backward links and fresh content?

I have tried tweaking my site for optimization by reading posts and following the google hacks book. One of the main points it stresses is to have fresh content and lots and lots of pages. I have about 80 pages (my goal is 200) and have had hit and miss success getting high rankings on certain keywords. But just can’t seem to get up there consistently for all of my pages. My site is there is a competitor of mine that has pretty much the same products as I do and right around the same amount of pages. His content never changes but he consistently shows high rankings. Could this only be due to backwards links?

I have been reading a lot of posts that refer to getting backwards links up. One post mentioned to make sure every page links back to the index page by providing the entire link for example: <a href=&quot; title=&quot;Keyword link description&quot;>Main Keyphrase Anchor Text</a>.
Currently I am only linking between pages with <a href=&quot;/fatbrners.php&quot;>.
When I check google link: I see only 2 links. But when I check my competitor he has about 4 pages worth showing how everything is linking to each other (all his own pages).
I tried sifting through the code to get an idea of what I am doing wrong but can’t put my finger on it because he is linking between pages with the same type of link that I am.

And how can I prevent from slipping. I know the main thing they say is to keep adding pages and fresh content, which can be difficult to keep up with.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback about any thing that might jump out as a problem?

Looking at the site, the optimisation that has been done is more about branding than targeting qualified traffic, by this I mean mostly the pages appear to be targeting &quot;Superior Body Supplements&quot; rather than a phrase that anyone looking for your products would use generally.
Your internal backlinks don't show because your internal PageRank(PR) is ~3 Google only shows backlinks of PR4 up, use the site: search instead,
this shows around 50 pages that Google knows about. Keyphrase anchor text internally does help PR, your navigation structure could be improved in this respect.
Adding fresh content and pages does get the crawlers to visit more often, don't obsess about it though, a page a month can be enough. A lot of what you need is good keyphrases and well written copy rather than marketing-speak.
don't concentrate too much on the SE spiders, they don't have credit cards.

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?

I agree 100% and my goals will include changing them to better verbiage and working on getting more links from other sites to mine.

Thanks Chris!
