Is half a sandwich still a sandwich?

Personally, I'd say yes... but some people I've asked have said no.

What do you think?

What would it be called if it's not called a sandwich?

According to
it is a piece of food between two slices of bread, which makes a sandwich. Therefore it shouldn't matter, whether what size the bread slices are. Half a slice on top and bottom should suffice.

If not: why not call it half a sandwich?

>...why not call it half a sandwich?

For lunch, I usually get the entree called "soup and half a sandwich" at the Au Bon Pain restaurant. Considering how full that gets me, I wouldn't contemplate eating a whole sandwich with soup.

So, for me, that "half a sandwich" is plenty of sandwich. If they call it "Soup and sandwich", I wouldn't know the difference.

That's a good one, Thadeus!

So how deep is half a hole?

Half as deep as it would be if it were twice as deep as it is.

Oh yeah, and the sandwich thing (darned pesky thread subjects....)

I'd say it is still a sandwich. I agree with MakeItSo's assessment. Any piece of food between two pieces of bread is a sandwich. If those tiny things served at cocktail parties are sandwiches, then 'half a sandwich' is certainly a sandwich.

==> things served at cocktail parties
Then a quarter of a sandwich is a sandwich, or is it an hors d'oeuvre?

Good Luck

A quarter of a sandwich is a sandwich, and it is not an hors d'oeuvre (which is eaten prior to the sandwich).

A sandwich is the main meal, an hors d'oeuvre is an appetizer. Although many people can make, and have made main dishes out of those little canapes, thus turning them into sandwiches -- small ones.

It's a matter of defining your entrees. One man's lady finger is another man's cake.

I so read that last line wrong Dimandja.

For reasons of good taste, I will not explain.

If you mean by half a sandwich you take one of the breads away and half of its contents, then you would have a piece of bread with stuff on it, not a sandwich.

So what do you have if someone places some filling between two slices of bread, cuts them into quarters (maybe removing the crust as well), and serves them before the meal?

A small sandwich hors d'oeuvre.

Hors d'oeuvre, of course. An appetizer served before a meal.

Dimandja - But not a sandwich because of when it's served?

hors d'oeuvre (noun) - a dish served as an appetizer before the main meal.

A small sandwich (half- or quarter-sized) can be an example of an hors d'oeuvre. But I'd prefer a stuffed mushroom.

I agree SF0751. I've always thought a sandwich is a sandwich because of what it is and how it's made, not when it's served or eaten. However, I enjoy learning about different perspectives, such as in this case, with the notion that a sandwich is only a sandwich when it's the main meal.

If a sandwich is a piece of food between two slices of bread, what is it when you take one slice of bread, put something in it, and then fold the slice in half over the filling?
