I recently designed a DTS package to retrieve data from Access 97 databases across 30 shop floor PC's. Basically, the setup of the package is selecting all the records from these 30 databases and inserting them into a SQL server. However, the users are complaining, which I have seen for myself, that the PC end acts very sluggish throughout the day. I am trying to figure out if this is coincidence and the problem is something else, or if in fact this package is causing these problems. The package begins at 1am in the morning, during downtime, although the application that utilizes these Access databases is still connected, and is usually completed by 1:20am. Following a reboot or sometimes it actually takes 2 reboots of the PC, it runs a lot faster. I am fairly new to DTS packages and would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

If it is taking 2 reboots, I would venture to say that it is NOT a DTS issue. In rebooting the PC for the first time, I am sure that any and all "ghost" connections would have been dropped and thus would not be causing any issues.

Have you taken a look in the Application and System event logs on the PCs to see if any other errors may be present that you are not aware of.

Is it possible to set up a test PC w/ the same type of Access97 DB and create a pull from it to see if it too shows the same issue?

What other operations is the DTS package performing? If it is just a straight record pull.

Also, after you have rebooted the PC one/two times and the application seems to be running as expected, take a look at the current processor and memory utilization.

Write down those stats for the application.

Now ... run your DTS package and see if the processor and/or memory are now spiked, above what you had during a "quite" system check.

Thanks

So, you have 30 pcs, each having shared folder, all of which server opens during dts package execution. Maybe there's something lurking here. How do you run the dts package? I guess, you are not having it open it dts designer (in EM) all the time..

After the package is run , can you see on some pc if there's a user in it's share?

Cheers
