My office currently uses CR 8.5. My boss has asked me if I think it is worthwhile to upgrade to 9.0.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance
Brett

Bretts,

I would say it depends upon your needs.

If you look at the feature comparison and analyze the new features with your needs in mind you can determine an answer.

To me, the fact that you can use memo fields in formulas and the new repository feature makes it a resounding yes!

Key reasons for upgrading....
1) You need complex formulas with strings longer than 254, or you need memo fields in a formula or record selection
2) You want charts to be numeric/time axis, gantt or gauge charts.
3) Crosstab improvements include % summaries, horizontal formatting and labels.
4) You want to have complex SQL to extract some data, but can't get into the DB to write a stored procedure.

The other features are nice, but not major reasons to upgrade. I like the docking Field Explorer and the report explorer. Templates are very useful, but I think the Repository needs some improvements before it will be of much use.

On the negative side, I fail to see why Set Alias has gone. I use it a lot in CR 8.

Chelseatech,

Set Alias isn't gone. It is just not intuitive. You can rename the table in the database expert, just like you can rename a file in windows explorer (single click or F2) but there is no option or button with the "Set Alias" name. Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting
