Hopefully, this is a "yes" or "no" answer. I have a three year old Dell computer, the hard drive is ATA 100. I just bought a new Maxtor hard drive that is ATA 133 before realizing the difference. I know just enough about computers to be dangerous : ) So, is ATA 100 compatible with ATA 133? So far, it hasn't worked, but I know there are lots of good reasons for that that I can correct if the ATA difference is not the issue.

Thanks,

Wayne

Yes! it should work fine so look elsewhere for the reason for your proble.

Jumper set correctly?
In the bios IDE0 is set to Auto?
You should be using the fine ultra cable!
Orientation of IDE cables

Explain what you are trying to do and full system spec

Thank you! What I'm wanting to do is install another 40 gig drive in my computer. Currently I have a 40 drive but it's full. I tried booting up with just the new drive hooked up but the computer didn't recognize it. By ultra fine cable do you mean an 80-conductor cable or what?

Yes, use the 80-conductor cable.

If you are adding the new drive to the same IDE channel as your existing drive, then make sure the existing one is set as master and this one is set as slave (look at the jumpers on the back). Also, anytime you have a drive by itself on a channel, it should be set to master.

Don't forget, the drive has to be formatted before Windows will see it. So the first thing you are trying to do is see if the BIOS recognizes it. Go into the BIOS and check there.
